World No. 349 Yosuke Watanuki shared his reaction to his surprising victory over Frances Tiafoe, with a score of 6-4, 7-6(6).

Watanuki’s achievement marks him as the lowest-ranked player to reach the Round of 16 at Indian Wells since 2004, a feat previously accomplished by No. 882 Tommy Haas.

In an emotional on-court interview, Watanuki exclaimed, “I’m just speechless. I am incredibly happy. After missing a significant amount of time last year due to injury, I am simply grateful to be back on the court.”

The Japanese player also revealed his collaboration with Wayne Ferreira, Tiafoe’s former coach.

“During my match against Tiafoe in Miami, Wayne was present in Frances’ box, observing the game. He possesses an in-depth understanding of Tiafoe’s playing style.”

Watanuki further elaborated on their working relationship, stating, “A key aspect of our work together involves managing my nerves and mental state during matches. We focus on addressing these psychological challenges. My primary goal is to enjoy the process of playing.”
