Two of golf’s biggest stars, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have joined forces to create a brand-new experience for sports fans. They are the driving force behind TGL, an innovative golf league that blends technology with interactive gameplay.
In partnership with the PGA Tour, TGL offers a unique and intimate way to watch top golfers compete in a custom-designed arena.
What is TGL Golf?
Launched in August 2022, TGL is a technology-driven, 3-on-3 golf league. It features six teams, each with four PGA Tour players, competing in two-hour matches at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
What Does TGL Stand For?
TGL is short for Tomorrow’s Golf League. This name comes from TMRW Sports, a company founded by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. TMRW Sports focuses on developing technology-based ventures in sports and entertainment.
How Do TGL Matches Work?
Each TGL match consists of two sessions:
- Triples: A nine-hole, 3-on-3 alternate shot format.
- Singles: Head-to-head competition over six holes, with each player playing two holes.
Key features of the TGL course at SoFi Center:
- The course size is approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, about the size of a football field.
- Golfers play from real grass tee boxes, fairways, rough, and sand into a large simulator screen.
- The green includes technology to change slopes for varied play.
- Each hole is worth one point, with overtime used to break ties.
- Overtime: Similar to a penalty shootout in soccer, golfers compete head-to-head until one team gets two shots closer to the pin.
- Shot Clock: A 40-second shot clock is enforced, with penalties for violations.
- Timeouts: Each team has four timeouts per match.
- Referee: Officials are present to enforce rules and monitor play.
- Players wear microphones to enhance the fan experience.
TGL events are designed to complement the PGA Tour schedule, and the season culminates in playoffs and a championship for the SoFi Cup.
TGL Points System
TGL’s points system is similar to the NHL. Teams earn points each regular season match to determine their SoFi Cup standing.
- Regulation win: 2 points
- Overtime win: 2 points
- Overtime loss: 1 point
The top four teams advance to single-elimination semifinals and a best-of-three championship series.
