World No. 43 Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands shared his assessment of his victory over world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the second round of the Masters tournament in Indian Wells.
“Beating Sasha is very challenging mentally. Last year I suffered four defeats against him, including a particularly heartbreaking loss at Roland Garros where I twice led by two breaks in the fifth set.
We have had many battles, and I’ve had opportunities in all our matches, but ultimately they always went in his favor. I am proud of my performance today and that I finally overcame this hurdle,” Griekspoor stated in an on-court interview.
Griekspoor’s win marks him as the first Dutch player since Ramon Sluyter in 2002 to defeat a player ranked in the top two of the ATP rankings at a hard-court tournament.
Alexander Zverev commented on his defeat in Indian Wells: ‘I’m simply not playing good tennis.’
