Wigan Athletic has announced the departure of Shaun Maloney, a celebrated figure in the club’s history, from his position as manager. The club is currently positioned 15th in League One.
In a statement reflecting the club’s respect for Maloney, Wigan expressed gratitude for his contributions.

Maloney’s connection with Wigan spans back to his playing days from 2011 to 2015, a period highlighted by the team’s historic FA Cup victory in 2013.
Following roles at Celtic, Aston Villa, Hull, and Hibernian, the former playmaker returned to Wigan in January 2023, succeeding Kolo Toure.
He brought stability to the club during a period of off-field difficulties, although he couldn’t prevent relegation in 2023.
Despite an eight-point penalty, Maloney successfully kept Wigan in League One the previous season.
However, a recent 2-1 defeat at home against Reading proved to be the decisive factor, with the team dangerously close to the relegation zone, just six points clear.
Wigan acknowledged Maloney’s challenging start in January 2023 amidst significant club turmoil.
The club recognized that while relegation to League One couldn’t be avoided, Maloney instilled a fighting spirit that facilitated their return to the league.
Wigan further highlighted Maloney’s commitment during the ownership transition in the summer of 2023. He remained with the club, navigating an eight-point deduction and a substantial squad reshuffle to secure League One status in the 2023/24 season comfortably.
The club stated that Maloney and his team delivered memorable moments, including an FA Cup match against Manchester United and victories over Bolton Wanderers.
Maloney is also credited with nurturing young talents within the squad, some of whom have progressed to advance their careers, benefiting the club.
Nonetheless, Wigan emphasized that the current League One season’s progress has fallen short of expectations.
Particularly, home game results and performances have been disappointing, failing to meet the standards expected by supporters. Consequently, the board concluded that a change in management was necessary.
This decision is timed to allow sufficient time for the appointment of a new manager to guide the club forward.
Maloney’s assistant, Max Rogers, has also departed, with Glenn Whelan, formerly of Stoke City, taking over as interim manager.
Despite the termination, Wigan expressed their appreciation for Maloney, emphasizing that he will “always be welcome” back at the club.
The board conveyed their sincere gratitude to Shaun and Max for their dedication and service to Wigan Athletic.
They expressed hope that Maloney’s managerial period, as well as his playing career at the club, will be fondly remembered by fans. Wigan reiterated that Shaun and Max are welcome at Wigan Athletic Football Club and the Brick Community Stadium anytime.
