Today marks the 77th birthday of Shamil Tarpischev, the President of the Russian Tennis Federation. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Shamil Anvyarovich, wishing him good health and continued success in all his endeavors.
Born on March 7, 1948, in Moscow, Shamil Tarpischev was actively involved in sports from childhood, playing football and bandy. He transitioned to tennis in 1956 after a football injury. After high school, he initially enrolled in the Biology Faculty of Moscow State University but later moved to the State Central Institute of Physical Culture.
Tarpischev achieved success in national and international tennis competitions, earning the title of Master of Sports in 1966.
In 1974, he transitioned to coaching, becoming the senior coach of ‘Dynamo’ Moscow and the head coach of the USSR national tennis team. From 1974, he captained the USSR Davis Cup team, and in 1997, he became the captain of the Russian national team. He also led the USSR Federation Cup team from 1978 to 1980.
Under Tarpischev’s guidance, the Russian national team achieved significant victories in team tournaments. They won the Davis Cup in 2002, 2006, and 2021, and Russian female tennis players triumphed in the Federation Cup in 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008.
In 2021, Shamil Anvyarovich marked his 100th match as Davis Cup captain, holding the longest tenure in the competition’s history. He decided to step down from this role in 2023 due to his age.
Shamil Anvyarovich’s successful career has been recognized with several state awards, including the Medal of the Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’ II degree, the Order ‘For Merit to the Fatherland’ III and IV degrees, and the Order of Honor.
In addition to his work with the Russian Tennis Federation, Shamil Tarpischev has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 1996 and is part of the Presidential Council for Physical Culture and Sports.
Tarpischev was married to tennis player Angela Korosidi and divorced in 1998. He has two sons, Philipp and Amir.
