Sam Patterson demonstrated he is more than just a submission expert by unexpectedly defeating Danny Barlow with a knockout in the first round at UFC Vegas 103 on Saturday.
Despite Barlow’s aggressive start, Patterson effectively avoided damage and capitalized with a perfectly timed counter punch that led to the finish. After staggering Barlow with a well-placed right hook, Patterson unleashed a series of strikes, including another powerful right hand and rapid follow-up shots, ending the fight.
The fight was stopped at 3:10 of the first round, marking Patterson’s third UFC victory and improving his record to 3-1.
“I feel amazing,” Patterson expressed after his win. “It was incredible. I’ve always said I’m not just a grappler. I’m a complete mixed martial artist. I can do everything. He landed some good shots, but mine were better in the end.”
From the beginning, Barlow seemed confident in his striking, consistently attempting to land a significant left hand while Patterson circled, evading Barlow’s power side. Barlow’s focus on pursuing a knockout seemingly overshadowed his defensive awareness during exchanges.
This lapse allowed Patterson to connect with a devastating right hook that immediately rocked Barlow, leaving him unsteady. Patterson maintained his attack, dropping Barlow and continuing with fight-ending blows until the referee intervened.
Following the match, Patterson revealed that Saturday’s event was the final fight on his current UFC contract, although his recent performance strongly suggests he has earned a new contract.
