Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland, both former UFC middleweight champions, have not yet clashed in the octagon, but Whittaker believes now is the opportune moment for this matchup.
Coming off recent losses to Dricus du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev respectively, both fighters are looking to rebound in the middleweight division. Whittaker sees a fight with Strickland as logical, given their history circling the top of the division.
“I think Strickland is a compelling opponent because we’ve both been contenders at the top for a while, orbiting each other,” Whittaker stated in an interview. “For some reason, we haven’t been matched up yet, but we’ve been close for a while, and it seems like the most sensible fight to make.”
“I’m excited about the prospect of fighting him. I find his fighting style intriguing and I’m eager to analyze it. He’s a tough competitor. I have confidence in my skills, even though there are off days. I’m constantly refining my abilities.”
Strickland last fought earlier this month and sustained a nose injury during his fight. Whittaker’s fight against Chimaev was last October.
While Strickland’s timeline might be uncertain after his recent loss, Whittaker aims to return to the octagon around the start of summer.
“I’ve been refining my skills and developing new techniques, and I’m aiming to return in June,” Whittaker said. “This timeframe allows me to continue my training and properly prepare for my next fight, ensuring I’m at my best.”
