In a recent interview, Thai Dai Van Nguyen reflected on his impressive chess achievements. He acknowledged 2024 as his most successful year, highlighting his individual gold medal at the Chess Olympiad and victory at the European Chess Club Cup.
Nguyen described winning the Olympiad gold as his greatest accomplishment in chess. He also mentioned the Club Cup gold and his second place at the Prague International Chess Festival (PICF) as significant successes in 2024.
Continuing his winning streak into 2025, Nguyen won the Challengers tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He emphasized the prestige of this victory, considering it his second greatest achievement after the Olympiad gold. He pointed out Wijk aan Zee’s long-standing tradition and the opportunity his win provides to compete in the Masters tournament against top world players next year.
Looking ahead to the Prague Chess Festival, Nguyen expressed his positive feelings about the event. He recalled his strong performance and second-place finish last year, especially considering he started as the lowest-rated player. For this year’s festival, he aims to enjoy the competition and maintain a high level of play.
When asked about the Masters lineup and potential opponents, Nguyen noted the strength of the field and expressed particular interest in playing against Anish Giri, a player he has never faced in a game before, despite some prior conversations.
Finally, Nguyen shared his appreciation for the Prague Chess Festival, stating it is his favorite tournament. He has participated in every edition since its inception and praised the excellent organization, strong competition, and the enjoyable experience of playing in Prague with local support.
