The recent agreement between UFC CEO Dana White and Saudi Arabian sports promoter Turki Alalshikh to introduce TKO Group Holdings to boxing could pave the way for Alex Pereira to face heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk. Pereira has confirmed his interest in such a matchup.
Pereira, who is set to defend his UFC light heavyweight title in Las Vegas against Magomed Ankalaev, shared his excitement about the news during a media event.
“I was thrilled when I heard the announcement,” Pereira stated. “Perhaps September, in Saudi Arabia.”
He added, “I was the first to express interest, followed by Usyk. Now, we need to see if the organizations are interested. I will be prepared.”
The only previous instance of the UFC partnering with a boxing organization for a special event was Conor McGregor’s high-profile boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. While McGregor lost, the event was a massive financial success.
Despite Dana White initially downplaying the idea of UFC fighters crossing over to boxing, his past statements suggest a potential shift in stance.
The potential fight gains further intrigue due to Usyk being the current heavyweight champion, unlike Mayweather who was retired when he fought McGregor. Pereira acknowledges the challenge in surpassing the commercial success of Mayweather vs. McGregor.
“It’s difficult to say,” Pereira commented. “We recognize their immense popularity, and while I am gaining ground, I believe I am still less known in the media. So, it’s uncertain how it would compare.”
Nevertheless, “Poatan” believes he is currently the most prominent figure in the UFC, which could boost the fight’s appeal.
“I believe so,” Pereira responded when asked about being the face of the UFC. “I am an active fighter, last year was very successful, and my name is being discussed in the media with positive outcomes. So, I think I am [the face of the UFC].”
While Pereira remains focused on his upcoming title defense against Ankalaev, he is clearly considering various future opportunities.
“My priority is to defend my belt, but we definitely have options,” Pereira mentioned. “A fight with Dricus Du Plessis at 205 pounds, Jon Jones at heavyweight, or boxing Usyk. These are options I’m considering.
“It’s not entirely up to me, I don’t have complete control. I will do whatever the UFC decides.”
