World No. 5 Madison Keys shared how she spent the first hours and days after winning the Australian Open.
“After leaving the court, I immediately gave six consecutive live TV interviews. At that point, I hadn’t even had time to shower or eat. I thought, ‘I’m so thirsty. I haven’t had a sip.’ An hour passed like that, and after that I finally had 20 free minutes. I took a doping test, then finally took a shower, grabbed some food, and then spent another two hours talking to the media. We returned to the hotel almost at three in the morning, and of course, I couldn’t fall asleep! I was just like a zombie. I was very happy, but at the same time, I didn’t even have time to breathe and absorb everything that happened.”
“Then we flew to New York, where I spent the whole day with the media. I returned to Florida on Tuesday evening, and for Wednesday, we had another commitment planned even before the season started. So I arrived and had to do something else the next day.”
“Probably on Thursday evening, I told my agent: ‘I’m done. I can’t, I’m putting my phone in the drawer. I can’t talk to anyone or be on the phone anymore. If anyone needs me, they can call [my husband] Bjorn. I’ll talk to everyone another time,’ Keys shared in a conversation with Rennae Stubbs.”
As a reminder, Keys will play her first tournament since the January ‘Grand Slam’ in Indian Wells.
