Coro, Vázquez, and Coppola on the Podium
The 8th edition of the Ciudad de Montevideo Open concluded last Saturday, with Argentine IM Lucas Coro emerging as the champion. Coro achieved a score of 8 out of 9 points, securing a clear first place. During the award ceremony, a visibly emotional Lucas expressed his appreciation for the tournament’s excellent atmosphere and organization, praising IA Sabrina de San Vicente and IM Bernardo Roselli Mailhe. He also conveyed his hopes to participate in future editions. Uruguayan players FM Facundo Vázquez and IM Claudio Coppola claimed second and third place, respectively.
In the women’s category, Argentine WIM Milagros Tatiana Brizzi took first place, followed by her compatriot WFM Anahí Meza in second, and Brazilian WFM Juliana Figueira in third.
In the 60+ category, FM Daniel Izquierdo from Uruguay achieved the highest score, with fellow Uruguayan Mario Saralegui taking second place.
A 40-inch television was raffled off to Uruguayan residents present at the award ceremony, with Juan Cayetano winning the prize.
This year’s Open saw participants from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, the United States, Mexico, Russia, Saint Lucia, and the Netherlands, in addition to local players. The tournament attracted a strong field of 2 GMs, 7 IMs, 1 WIM, 8 FMs, and 3 WFMs, totaling 99 participants.
The event was held at the Conference Center in the Montevideo Municipality, thanks to the support of Silvia Pérez, the Sports Coordinator of the Municipality, who facilitated the use of the Red and Golden Halls for the tournament.
Over 5,000 dollars in prizes were distributed across different categories, made possible by the sponsorship of IM Tomas Darcyl and Dr. Ricardo Costianovsky. Additional support was provided by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Uruguayan Chess Federation, and the Club Banco República.

2nd Promotional Chess Tournament
Running alongside the Open, the Promotional Open featured 45 players. Nahuel Ibarburu emerged as champion with a perfect score after five rounds, tied with Brian Barros, who finished second on tiebreaks. Evangelina Polito secured third place with 4½ points out of 5.
Category winners in the Promotional Tournament included Alex Morón (Under-8), Leandro Laguna (Under-10), Leonardo Marquisio, Joaquín Ferraro, and Felipe Tejera (Under-12), Julius Werle, Lucio Indart, and Martin Montossi (Under-14), and Lautaro Varela, Emiliano Baptista, and Ignacio Olivera (Under-20).
In the women’s Promotional category, the winners were Milagros Costa, Carolin Werle, and Lara Escaris. Jorge Rodríguez Rearden topped the 50+ category, while Gustavo Tramutolo won the 65+ category. The non-ranked category podium was composed of Joel Azambuja, Carlos Munoz, and Eduard Buller.
Event t-shirts were gifted to several participants through raffles during the rounds and at the award ceremony’s conclusion.
