Due to a doping incident involving Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player, the Laureus World Sports Academy press service, led by chairman Sean Fitzpatrick, has released a statement.
The announcement confirms that the organization has withdrawn his nomination for the ‘World Sportsman of the Year’ award.
According to the statement: ‘Following discussions within the Laureus Academy, it was decided to retract Jannik Sinner’s nomination for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. We have been closely monitoring the situation, including the decisions of relevant international bodies, and despite acknowledging mitigating circumstances, we have concluded that the three-month suspension makes his candidacy untenable. Jannik and his representatives have been informed.’
Last spring, clostebol was detected in the Italian athlete’s test samples. In February of this year, Sinner was suspended from competition for three months.
