Magomed Ankalaev has stated his immediate agreement to a rematch with Alex Pereira for his first defense of the UFC light heavyweight title. The decision now rests with Pereira to accept the proposed five-round fight.
After securing the UFC belt in Las Vegas at UFC 313 against the popular Brazilian fighter, Ankalaev was met with a hero’s welcome upon his return to Dagestan. He informed local media that he is currently in discussions with UFC management to determine his next steps in the division.
“Negotiations are underway,” Ankalaev commented. “Currently, I am unsure of my next opponent, but we have instantly agreed to a rematch if they desire it. We are prepared.”
Ankalaev acknowledged Pereira’s prominent status within the UFC, built on a series of impressive victories. He believes there were attempts to challenge him mentally and delay his title opportunities.
“We understand there were prolonged attempts to disrupt us mentally, and certain tactics were employed against me. However, we chose to persevere and continue moving forward,” Ankalaev explained. “This serves as an example for those striving for achievement: do not stop, keep progressing, and everything will come to fruition.”
Ankalaev boasts an undefeated streak of 14 fights in the octagon, including victories over notable fighters such as Aleksandar Rakic, Johnny Walker, Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos, and Volkan Oezdemir. Now a UFC champion, Ankalaev expressed his gratitude to the hundreds who welcomed him back to Makhachkala after his successful trip to Las Vegas.
“I want to sincerely thank each of you for your presence and your support,” Ankalaev said. “I deeply appreciate it. Even in the USA, where the majority were supporting my opponent, I felt the support from home. It provided me with significant motivation. I thank you all for being with me. May Allah grant you good health, and may we all remain united in Dagestan.”
