Everton are reportedly exploring a surprising transfer for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

For Newcastle, selling Longstaff, a local player who progressed through their academy, would represent a 100 percent profit under Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

According to reports, Everton are prepared to make a move for Longstaff in the upcoming summer transfer window.

David Moyes, the Everton manager, is known to be an admirer of the 27-year-old midfielder, having considered signing him during his time at West Ham.

Longstaff is believed to be open to the possibility of leaving St James’ Park after being associated with Newcastle for 19 years.

Born in North Shields, Longstaff joined Newcastle’s youth system at the age of nine in 2006 and was promoted to the senior squad in 2016.

Last season, Newcastle were focused on complying with Financial Fair Play regulations, making them potentially receptive to selling an academy graduate for “pure profit.”

The concept of “pure profit” allows clubs to record the entire transfer fee as revenue, making the sale of academy players, who cost nothing in transfer fees, particularly appealing.

With Longstaff’s contract set to expire in June 2026, a profitable sale might be a logical step for Newcastle.

A transfer would mark the first time in Longstaff’s career that he plays for a club other than Newcastle.

Longstaff has faced competition for playing time this season, falling down the midfield hierarchy.

This season, he has started only eight of Newcastle’s 28 Premier League matches and made 13 substitute appearances.

Currently, Longstaff is competing for a midfield spot with players like Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock, and Lewis Miley.

He has contributed 16 goals and 11 assists in 210 appearances for Newcastle.

His brother, Matty Longstaff, also a midfielder, permanently joined Toronto as a free agent in January 2024 after loan spells at Aberdeen, Mansfield Town, and Colchester United.

Looking ahead, Longstaff is aiming to help Newcastle secure their first major club trophy in 70 years.

Newcastle are set to play against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
