Dougie Freedman has resigned from his position as sporting director at Crystal Palace to join a second-division club in Saudi Arabia.
Crystal Palace announced Freedman’s immediate departure, stating he is taking on a role overseas.
Sources indicate that Freedman is set to become the sporting director for Al-Diriyah, the newly crowned champions of Saudi Arabia’s second tier.
Last year, Freedman was close to leaving for Newcastle, a club partly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
However, Steve Parish, Crystal Palace’s chairman, convinced him to remain at Selhurst Park.
Freedman was also considered by Manchester United as a potential head of recruitment under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
During his playing career, Freedman spent eight years with Palace after transferring from Nottingham Forest in 2000.
He played 320 games for the Eagles and returned as their manager for a season in 2011.
Freedman also held managerial positions at Bolton and his former club, Forest, before transitioning to boardroom roles.
He rejoined Palace as sporting director in 2017 and is recognized for bringing in talented players like Conor Gallagher, Marc Guehi, and Michael Olise.
Freedman was also a key figure in the appointment of manager Oliver Glasner last year.
It is believed that Freedman felt restricted by budget limitations during the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace is currently 12th in the Premier League, above Manchester United. The club confirmed Freedman’s departure in an online statement.
