Samir Shah, the head of the BBC, has stated that Match of the Day should move away from being primarily a highlights program.
The new BBC leader is keen on implementing significant changes within the organization to safeguard its independence amidst declining revenue.
As a dedicated Manchester United supporter, Shah has a strong interest in Match of the Day, but he contends that it needs to be modernized.
Many viewers now access Premier League highlights online well before Match of the Day airs on Saturday nights.
Consequently, Shah mentioned to The Times, “[Match of the Day] should not be centered around highlights.
“It should be structured around analysis and examination of the game, providing viewers with a more profound understanding.”
Significant changes are anticipated for Match of the Day this summer as Gary Lineker, the long-serving presenter, will depart after 25 years.
His successors will be Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates.
There’s also speculation that Wayne Rooney might join the program as a pundit.
He has already been on BBC as part of their coverage during Euro 2024.
Rooney also made a positive impression as a pundit during a recent appearance for Amazon Prime.
He was part of the broadcast for the Champions League match between Manchester City and Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.
