Anthony Smith Doubts GFL’s Success with Aging Fighters

Global Fight League (GFL) generated considerable buzz by announcing a new team-based fighting league, promising numerous benefits for fighters and signing many former champions and well-known figures in the sport.

Recently, GFL began announcing high-profile fights, such as a rematch between Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold, and a bout between Tony Ferguson and Dillon Danis. However, these matches lack confirmed dates or locations, and GFL has not released details about its inaugural event or broadcast plans.

Anthony Smith, a seasoned light heavyweight fighter and UFC commentator, while not directly involved with GFL, has heard information from other fighters and is skeptical about the promotion’s ability to become established.

Smith stated, “It’s strange. I’m not convinced yet. They haven’t held any events, and my knowledge of the promotion is limited to the fighters they’ve signed. Rumors within the fighter community suggest they are offering very high pay. This leads me to believe it won’t last.”

He added, “This strategy of heavily investing in older, past-their-prime fighters has been tried repeatedly and has consistently failed. I don’t see any unique approach they are taking, other than simply spending large sums on aging fighters.”

The list of prominent fighters who have joined GFL is impressive, with several coming out of retirement, likely attracted by the prospect of significant earnings.

One notable signing at GFL’s launch was Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, a former UFC light heavyweight champion. Rua last fought in 2023, announcing his retirement after a knockout defeat. This loss concluded a three-fight losing streak for the respected Brazilian fighter, seemingly indicating it was time to retire.

Despite retirement, Shogun signed with GFL, and the promotion has announced a planned fight against Yoel Romero for his return.

Tony Ferguson is another GFL roster member who considered retirement after his eighth consecutive loss, ending his 13-year UFC career. While Ferguson’s losing streak is extensive, Smith is less concerned about Ferguson fighting again compared to Shogun, given Shogun’s age (43) and career history.

Smith explained, “I understand why fighters are accepting these generous offers, especially if they are not actively competing. Many fighters continue training and remain involved in gyms. So, I assume they are generally in good condition. However, some of these comebacks concern me, Shogun’s being one of them.”

“Actually, I am less opposed to Tony fighting. Considering Tony’s recent opponents, even in his losses, they are not low-level fighters but skilled and competitive. I’m more comfortable with Tony continuing because I wonder what Tony would do without fighting. I worry about Tony if he lacked this outlet. I admire Tony Ferguson; if fighting is his wish, he should pursue it. Shogun is more concerning. He has endured many fights and battles, and in his recent appearances, his enthusiasm seemed diminished, unlike Tony, who always shows intense desire to compete. Shogun’s last few fights didn’t give the impression he wanted to be there.”

Smith acknowledged being impressed by some of GFL’s fighter acquisitions, recognizing that these signings likely involved substantial financial incentives.

As no fighters have yet received payment, Smith reserves further judgment until GFL actually hosts its first event.

Smith concluded, “I’m not convinced they will be around for long, so I’m unsure of the long-term significance. However, some signings surprised me, such as Alexander Gustafsson. How did they manage to sign him? I thought he was enjoying a peaceful life in Stockholm, but they convinced him to return. They must be offering very large sums. If they can attract fighters like Alexander Gustafsson, they are definitely spending big.”
