World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has shared his thoughts on his unsuccessful run at the Latin American tournaments. He faced early exits in Buenos Aires, Rio, and Acapulco.

“The South American series was not good for me. I was ill for two out of the three weeks, which was definitely not ideal.”

“However, I wanted to compete on clay and participate in this series of events. I had heard many positive things about it and wanted to experience it firsthand.”

“In Buenos Aires, I suffered from food poisoning. In Rio, I was close to victory, but the conditions were extremely hot and humid, making it incredibly challenging.”

“My performance level wasn’t at its best either. Perhaps deciding to go there was an error, especially after reaching the final of the Australian Open. Maybe it would have been better to stay on hard courts for a bit longer. But I wanted to transition to clay and get accustomed to it as soon as possible. Historically, I perform well on clay, but the initial couple of weeks are always about adapting. During this period, my play is weaker, and I tend to lose.”

“My aim was to get through this adaptation phase quickly and hopefully find my rhythm on this surface to prepare better for Roland Garros,” Zverev stated during a press conference in Indian Wells.
