Former England international striker Jermain Defoe has received his fourth driving ban as a result of speeding offences.
The 42-year-old former Premier League star was disqualified from driving for a year after being recorded travelling at 82mph in a 70mph zone last October.
Magistrates in St Albans were informed that Defoe, who earned 57 caps for England, was driving a Land Rover in Wormley, Hertfordshire.
His defence barrister highlighted that Defoe, who was not present in court, should receive credit for his guilty plea.
Defoe was ordered to pay a fine of £660, court costs of £90, and a victim surcharge of £266.
He was also issued three penalty points, which when added to the nine already on his licence, triggered the disqualification under the totting-up procedure.
This is not Defoe`s first encounter with driving bans. He was previously banned for six months for speeding in July 2008, followed by another six-month ban for a similar offence the subsequent year (2009).
Additionally, in May 2008, he admitted exceeding the speed limit, driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone in Portsmouth, resulting in four penalty points.
In October 2010, he appeared in court after being caught using a mobile phone while driving in Loughton. This resulted in three points and an £800 fine, narrowly avoiding a ban at the time.
His third six-month ban was imposed two years ago, in December 2020, when he was caught driving at 56mph in a 30mph zone in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire.
